Texas Holdem vs. Omaha poker – poker games with a difference

Omaha poker and Texas Holdem poker look similar, but they are actually two very different games. They have the same fundamentals, but it requires different skills and a different type of player to be consistently successful. Here are some of the main differences between the games and what it takes to be successful playing Omaha hi poker online.

Number Of Cards Dealt

The first difference between Omaha poker and Texas Holdem poker is the number of hole cards dealt to each player before the flop. In Texas Holdem, each player is dealt two cards. But, in Omaha poker, each player is dealt four hole cards. This must mean there are more opportunities for playing in Omaha, right? Well, generally speaking, yes. But, that does not mean you should be playing more hands. You need a stronger starting hand in Omaha to be successful than you need in Texas Holdem. A pair in Omaha is quite usual, and a bunch of uncoordinated hole cards rarely wins.

Winning Hands

The next difference between Omaha poker and Texas Holdem is the average strength of a winning hand. It is relatively common for a pair with a high kicker to be a winning hand in Texas Holdem. But, in Omaha poker, a hand of that strength will rarely hold up. You need to have something higher than two pair to usually win a hand, and something like a flush or a straight which is safer. You are dealt more hole cards, so hands like these are a lot more common than in Texas Holdem.

Adding In Hi/Lo

When you add in the Hi/Lo variation to Omaha poker tournaments, the whole game changes. When you are playing against other players, you don’t know what kind of hand they are drawing too. So, you could be thinking you are playing against them for the high hand, but in reality you are playing them for the low hand. This just makes the game that much more difficult, yet that much more exciting.

The key to winning in Omaha is seeing as many poker hands as you can, reading all the poker tips available, and developing a profitable online poker strategy. There is almost no chance of being profitable if you just play by the seat of your pants and hope to get lucky. Omaha poker favours skilled players, and if you don’t have what it takes, your bankroll will be gone in no time.
